Why the Best Trips Can’t Be Googled

Harnal Travel founder Ruchi, a 2026 Travel + Leisure A-List advisor and three-time Condé Nast Traveler Top Travel Specialist, on the personal moment that changed how she plans every trip.

In 2009, my husband spent a grueling year unable to walk. When he finally recovered, a standard vacation wasn’t going to cut it. We needed something that matched the magnitude of what we’d been through. So we hiked the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

Standing at the Sun Gate, I understood something I hadn’t been able to fully articulate before. Travel isn’t just about seeing new places. It’s one of the most powerful ways to mark the moments that actually matter.

That’s why I founded Harnal Travel. And it’s the lens through which we design every single journey.

This Doesn’t Happen by Accident

After traveling to more than 160 countries — not just on work trips, but real travel with my family — I’ve learned one thing with certainty: the trips that change people don’t come from a booking engine or a “Top 10” list. They come from someone who has actually been there. Someone who knows which guide will bring history to life, which villa looks better in photos than in person, and when to tear up the itinerary and go somewhere better.

I don’t just book trips. I scout them. I’ve rerouted safari itineraries in real time. I’ve personally stayed in the villas I recommend. I pay attention to the details that don’t show up in any brochure, because those are the ones that make a trip feel extraordinary instead of just expensive.

The Industry Seems to Agree

I’m honored to have been named to the Travel + Leisure A-List two years running and recognized as a Condé Nast Traveler Top Travel Specialist for the third consecutive year. I share this not to impress — but because when you’re trusting someone with your time, you deserve to know it’s in good hands. And time is the one thing you can’t get back.

Built for People Who Don’t Have Time to Plan, But Refuse to Settle

The families and professionals I work with are busy. They don’t have 40-plus hours to spend planning a vacation, they’d rather be using that time to enjoy it. They want a trip that feels like them from start to finish, with someone who anticipates what they’ll need before they say a word.

That’s what we do at Harnal Travel. We’re a boutique luxury travel advisory based in Washington, D.C., backed by a dedicated operations team that coordinates like a Swiss watch but communicates with Italian warmth. Every journey is built on firsthand experience, trusted relationships, and the kind of personal connection that opens doors you didn’t know existed, a private cooking class with a Tuscan grandmother, after-hours access to a museum, a hands-on conservation project in Kenya.

No algorithms. No one-size-fits-all packages. Just travel that actually means something.

What Milestone Are You Ready to Celebrate?
